Only in recent history has this become a possibility. More and more moms work from home, and it's all because of the Internet. This has given everyone on the planet the ability to set up a business or provide a service without ever leaving the comfort of their homes. Here are three great ways to make some money while still having time to spend with your kids:
Be paid to write
If you're a mom looking for a way to make money online, and you're a competent writer, there has never been such opportunity! You can be paid to blog, though you'll have to disclose that fact to your readers. You can be a ghostwriter for business owners online looking to increase traffic to their websites. Or, you can just hang your shingle in a place like Elance.com, Odesk.com, or Guru.com and bid on projects that are in line with your interests. Moms work from home writing for other people every day.
Or, you can write for yourself. eBooks are popular online, and if you have a topic that you're passionate about and know a lot about, you can write an eBook and sell it online through a site like ClickBank. eBooks are generally shorter than traditional books, and they bring higher prices because it's more about perceived value. When people are learning valuable information about a niche they love, they're willing to pay more, and if you're a prolific writer, this can sovle the "moms work from home" problem easily.
Be paid to sell
eBay is an obvious solution to the moms work from home problem. Find some stuff lying around the house that you're ready to part with and learn the ins and outs of selling on eBay. When you're good at it, then think about expanding. Take the kids to garage sales and find items that you can easily sell and ship while picking up a few goodies for the kids to play with at bargain basement prices.
eBay isn't difficult. You can find tons of great information on using the system in their Learning Center or have your questions answered by other eBay merchants in their forums. Setting up a product is pretty easy, too, as the system walks you through the process. Just be sure to have an online payment processor set up, such as PayPal, which is owned by the same company as eBay, to collect and distribute funds. Setting an account up at PayPal is free, and for moms working at home, the cost of doing business is often an issue.
Affiliate marketing
Selling products that someone else created is another great way for moms to work from home. This solves the problem of customer service, collecting money, copywriting, and product creation or location completely. All of that is done for you by the person offering the product, and all you have to do is sell the product and collect a commission.
You will need to have a system set up to build a list, if you pursue this route. A list is a group of people who are interested in products that are niche-centric. That means if you're selling a golfing product, you'll want to have a list of people's names and email addresses, who are interested in golf. If they're not, you won't be able to sell them a golfing product.
This will involve a bit of expense, as you'll need a domain, a hosting account, and an autoresponder account. The domain is inexpensive, probably less than $10 a year. The hosting and autoresponder account will cost under $75 combined, but the reason you might want to consider this option as a mom working at home is that affiliate marketing probably pays the most money. It can conceivably replace the income that you lost when leaving your job. But it all depends on you. Nothing happens unless you take action to do what's required and do it the right way.
